Presentation of the Climate Neutrality Action Plan and Climate City Contract of the City of Athens

September 12, 2024

Athens City Hall. Athens, Greece

Abstract

On September 12, 2024, Athens officially presented its 2030 Climate Neutrality Action Plan, a comprehensive strategy that identifies the strengths and gaps in existing policies and uses all levers of change to create a coordinated portfolio of interventions aimed at achieving climate neutrality by 2030. On the same day, the city signed a formal contract committing to this ambitious target, signalling a clear dedication to a sustainable and resilient future.

Presented by the NFI Team that day, the 2024 cohort of the Norman Foster Institute played a significant role in this milestone. Through detailed analyses and on-the-ground research, the cohort contributed valuable insights into mitigating urban heat effects—a critical challenge for Athens. Their work helped shape tangible strategies that focus on cooling interventions, green infrastructure and spatial planning, directly addressing the city’s vulnerabilities and improving quality of life for its citizens.
