Essential Homes recognised by Architectural Digest Spain for its sustainable and socially driven design

Architectural Digest Spain has published an in-depth feature on Essential Homes, a project developed by the Norman Foster Foundation and Holcim, highlighting it as one of the most innovative proposals in the field of socially driven prefabricated housing.

The article, published on 12 January 2026, examines the key qualities of the prototype presented at the Venice Biennale 2023, emphasising its sustainable, modular and affordable approach. Conceived as a response to both emergency and displacement scenarios and to the global affordable housing crisis, Essential Homes proposes a model that prioritises dignity, comfort and architectural quality.

Among the aspects highlighted in the feature are the use of low-carbon and recyclable materials, the possibility of expansion to meet the evolving needs of families, and an estimated cost of under €20,000. The dwelling has been designed to provide safety and wellbeing in extreme weather conditions, while also being suitable for long-term habitation. The project challenges the conventional notion of temporary shelters and instead advocates for the creation of permanent homes and communities.

The Essential Homes project invites a rethinking of housing solutions for displaced and vulnerable populations, reinforcing the idea that access to dignified, high-quality housing is a fundamental right and a key driver of social development.
